Metal Roofing – Through Fastened (Corrugated Types)
- Description – Prepainted or plain galvalume coated steel and aluminum. Roll formed into various panel designs with coverage’s from 24” to 36” in width and panel lengths up to 70’. Panels are attached with exposed fasteners.
- Benefits – Lower cost, fast and easy installation. Panels offer high strength, low weight, wind and fire resistance and are available in a wide range of colors.
- Disadvantages – Over-torquing fasteners can cause damage to the screws or panels.
- Warranties – Typical manufacturer’s warranty ranges from 10-20 years on paint finish.
- Special Considerations – Manufacturer’s minimum slope requirements dependent upon which panel profile and substance is being used. Fastener placement is the key to a watertight roof.
Composition Shingles
- Description – Organic felts or fiberglass coated with asphalt and covered with colored granules.
- Benefits – Cost effective roof systems. Manufacturers offer a wide variety of colors, styles and options for algae and fungus resistance.
- Disadvantages – Depending on the products selected and the area location, the shingles may not last as long as stated by the manufacturer.
- Warranties – Typical manufacturer material warranties range from 20-50 years, depending on the product.
- Special Considerations – Manufacturer’s have many special requirements such as ventilation, minimum slope requirements and underlayment requirements that must be met in order to maintain a material warranty.
Wood Shakes
- Description – Most wood shakes are made of cedar, in various cuts and grades.
- Benefits – Durable roofing system with a proven history and track record.
- Disadvantages – Requires periodic maintenance including cleaning and wood treatments to limit effects of moisture, algae and fungus growth.
- Warranties – Typical Manufacturer’s warranties are for 30 years.
- Special Considerations – When selecting a wood shake, it is critical to understand the cut and grade. A minimum Class C fire-treatment is required by the Building Code.
